PROCEDURAL LACE

PROCEDURAL LACE

Reclaimed yarn (fiber content unknown), crochet hook

2026

15″ x 15″

This project uses p5.js to produce lace patterns within a 50×50 grid. It references the visual language of filet crochet, a medium that, like code, relies on a binary of “on” and “off” (filled blocks and open mesh). Through cellular automation and a layer of Perlin noise, the system creates black and white compositions that resemble traditional handmade structures while introducing variation and unpredictability. The work looks at the exchange of digital systems and manual craft, drawing connections between pixel-based imagery and the logic of grids embedded in historical textile practices.
